My Approach to Therapy
Brian L. Clarke, MS
Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
California license # MFC 48784
General Statement:
Therapy is a strategy to engage the life process of a client, and to offer support and insight appropriate to the client’s re-engagement in their own process.
Therapy is the third level of engagement available to a client.
Phase One: Coaching. The issue is Known to client. A possible solution is Known to client. The dialog with self is:“I know that I need to…, but…”
Phase Two: Counseling. The issue is Known to client. A possible solution is Not known to client. The dialog with self is “I know what the problem is, but I don’t know what to do”
Phase Three: Therapy. The issue is Not known to client. No solution appears to exist. The dialog with self is “I don’t know why, but things just don’t feel right”

Therapists are licensed and regulated by the State of California. They are required to meet both academic and supervised practical training standards; they are regulated by a code of ethics that carry real consequences if breached; and they provide a guarantee of full confidentiality under the law to the client.
Coaches and Counselors may have specialized training in an area of expertise, but are not regulated by the state and do not provide confidentiality under the law.
Therapist may offer both coaching and counseling when appropriate, but neither coaches nor counselors may provide therapy.
My areas of expertise:
Family Therapy, informed by the work of Murray Bowen and his colleagues, with particular interest in individuals coming from families of Irish background.
Consequences of Trauma, including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
Depth Psychology, informed by the writings of C.G. Jung, and the first generation of practitioners that followed him.
Psychological Development of Males over the full cycle of life, with special emphasis on the tasks of latency (age 6-11) in the absence of a supportive father.
