Faced with "All Therapists," how do you go about choosing a psychologist for your psychotherapy, individual counseling, or marriage counseling?  One idea is to phone a prominent psychologist or marital counselor in your area and ask that person, "Could you name three mental health professionals that you consider to be the highest regarded in my area?"  Repeat this with a few others, and see which counselors or counseling services are repeatedly recommended.  You should consider including your primary care physician in this inquiry, or here in NH you could phone the NH Psychological Association.  At the national level, there is the National Register of Health Care Providers in Psychology, whose registrants meet high standards to be listed.  Of course you can Google, and read and read.  It can be a difficult process, as most folks know little about counseling when faced with this important choice.  It's important to not be discouraged, or if your first efforts don't feel like a good match, to not dismiss the counseling option, but go on to explore further.

Dr. Carl Hindy has been a licensed psychologist here in NH for over two decades, and for nearly as long has been listed in the National Register.  He invites you to call ... Yes, even to ask him who he would suggest for various emotional, family, couples, marital, parenting, and life stage concerns.  He has been part of the NH mental health community long enough to be familiar with available services.

Dr. Hindy has a broad practice of clinical psychology, and works with teens, adults, couples, and families.  Since his book on relationships (see below) has endured and been popular for so long, he continues to amass considerable experience working with couples in premarital and marriage counseling.  He is a staff affiliate of both local Nashua, NH hospitals: St. Joseph Hospital, and Southern NH Medical Center.  He has an independent practice, however, a small private practice that can provide a goodly level of comfort and privacy.  (For example, Dr.Hindy returns phone calls and schedules his own appointments, rather than using clerks and intake or triage workers as often seen in large practices and clinics.  He maintains and secures his own records, rather than using a shared records office or department, and no records are released without his personal awareness and of course any necessary authorizations from the client.  For example, such levels of privacy would be more difficult to establish in offices where there are ten, twenty or more doctors sharing a waiting room, administrative staffers, receptionists, records department clerks and so on).
