I also dealt with Dr. Pickar in the judicial arena. He dropped the ball for the following reasons:

During a custody ruling he reassured the court that there was no parental alienation happening. Two other respected psychologists disagreed. One of these psychologists went as far as to say it was the worse case of parental alienation she had ever encountered. Dr. Pickar maintained his position

Initially, the court sided with him. This gave my ex-wife several more years to brainwash. By the time I was given the opportunity to reunify with my children they didn't want anything to do with me. This was overwhelming for me since my children were one of the few people that I truly loved. I was a very good father. Don't believe me, ask the people that witnessed it.

He also dropped the ball on his evaluation. As ironic as it may seem, the various psychological test I was given indicated I was basically a normal person; my ex-wife scored high on the "L" (Lie) scale. Dr. Pickar also stated he couldn't determine her psychological profile because of how she tested, yet he believed what my ex-wife said and determined I wasn't telling the truth. This,of course, is a synopsis of what came down.

My ex-wife had my children report that I had sexually abused them. Now that they are older, both have said that this wasn't true. But it is too late, the damage has been done.

Sixteen years have gone by. I tried, to the best of my abilities for fourteen years, to form a relationship with them. They don't want anything to do with me. If things were different, my children would have enriched my life as I would have enriched theirs.

I've cut the strings of my heart (figuratively speaking) and finally come to terms that my children were taken away from me when they were eight years-old. Sometimes life just isn't fair even in the most gross situations.

My children are doing well. One has been in a good relationship for four years and just graduated from college. The other one has been in a good relationship for three years and will graduate from college next year  (I only know this through Facebook and a person who knows them).  I refrain from telling them the truth of their mother's part in this matter because of the above and the fact that my children do love their undeserving mother.

In every profession mistakes are made. Just don't make the mistake that if a professional has a title and impressive credentials that he is infallible. He is like the rest of us. It can also be said that a profession of power causes more misery.

Speculation Outside the Scope of his Practice

Dr. Pickar speculated outside the scope of his expertise as a psychologist.  Dr. Pickar is not medically trained, yet offered his opinion in a report to the court in a child custody proceeding to the effect that "serotonin is a drug ingredient."  His rationale was that because the medication I was prescribed contained "only small amounts" of serotonin, it couldn't possibly be the case that I had suffered a severe adverse drug reaction known as serotonin syndrome.  First year psychology students learn that serotonin is a neurotransmitter, not a drug ingredient. Dr. Pickar's recommendations that my daughter be heavily restricted from me for four to six months (based on his speculation outside the scope of his expertise) resulted in my daughter being diagnosed with a separation anxiety disorder. Additionally, Dr. Pickar refused to interview my parents, who were exclusively in a position to refute allegations contained in court declarations. Dr. Pickar disregarded the opinion of my primary care physician (medically trained) that I had a physiological basis (adverse drug reaction) for hospitalization, and refused to update the court when the finding of a severe adverse drug reaction to prescribed medication was upheld by a forensic psychiatrist.  Because the psychological testing that Dr. Pickar performed on me provided no evidence for psychopathology, Dr. Pickar speculated that I had a disorder "in remission"!  The psychiatrist told me the diagnosis of "bipolar disorder in remission" was absurd, and an attorney I consulted with told me I had been "railroaded."   Don't let it happen to you.  The proper medical determination was upheld by the psychiatrist:  "Mr. B does not now, nor has he ever exhibited the required symptoms or signatures of mood disorder, thought disorder, or personality disorder or any other diagnostic requirement for psychopathology."  I was forced to spend thousands of dollars in legal expenses and costs associated with compliance with his recommendations. Dr. Pickar attempted to provide the report to opposing counsel prior to providing a copy to my attorney, demonstrating efforts at preferential treatment to opposing counsel in violation of local rules of court.

To summarize, Dr. Pickar is a go-to guy for the local for-profit attorneys who benefit financially from protraction of litigation.  Dr. Pickar is a member of the "Court-Involved Therapist Referral List" put together by the local Sonoma County Bar Association.  The use of this referral list has been deemed to constitute a "lack of the required judicial neutral stance of the court" by the new Family Court Services Manager here in Sonoma County.

My advice, should it be recommended or ordered by the Court for you to be assessed by Dr. Pickar is to question him as to how many clients he has been referred by opposing counsel.  Better yet, seek out another more objective psychologist who does not have well-established connections to the money grubbing divorce industry.
