 I saw this guy for about a year when I was in high school because I was struggling with depression. During most of our sessions my parents would be there as well and he had us work through our problems as a family. He facilitated the conversation between my parents and I and at first it was very liberating for us to talk openly about the problems we had in our family. The advice he gave us though was pretty crappy and ended up making our situation worse. He determined that most of the problems I had were due to a distant relationship with my father and tried to repair our relationship by encouraging my dad to hang out with me more (he didn't). My dad was never there for me as a kid because I think my dad might struggle with undiagnosed depression himself and just telling him to make an effort wasn't going to solve anything. It soured my relationship with my dad and caused even deeper fractures in my family that continue to this day. NOT an expert by any means.
