A family member of mine is a patient of hers and is currently going through a crisis in which she is putting her future at risk.  I called to express concern and ask if there was any way we could have a family therapy session in an effort to have a professional provide insight into her patient's struggle and so that we could have an open, non-judgmental conversation as we figured out the next steps to take.   Grace was incredibly combative when we suggested having a family session (which, to me, is quite strange as she is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist).  While I understand that she cannot violate her patient's privacy and disclose any information, I was not asking her to.  She would not even disclose the fact that this person was her patient despite the fact that I receive her bills through our family insurance. I suggested that she call her patient to inform her that we would like to talk (I have done this before with other therapists and it has yielded incredibly helpful results)  She was condescending, rude and did not express concern for her patient at all and in the end refused to talk to me.  I am worried that she is doing more harm than good with her patient as my family member is not doing any better in her current situation.

I have been a client of Grace's for both individual and couples' counseling.  Grace has helped me tremendously; she is accepting, supportive, knowledgeable.  She has been accomodating to me when I have been in crisis and needed to see her more often.  She has never pushed any agenda on me but has helped me determine my own goals and action steps.  I heartily recommend her for anyone, whether new to therapy or someone who has been doing therapy previously.

I was referred to Ms. Nakamura by my attorney who was a friend of hers (by his own word) when I had some legal and psychiatric issues and he felt I could use a psychotherapist other than my regular psychiatrist. All I got was a 2 sentence letter on my behalf which did no good that I am aware of, lectured on how my attorney was the best ever and to do exactly what he said (not accurate)at all costs, and told I should "read books or short stories to escape from my troubles." As far as helping me with my coping skills as she initially stated she planned to do, didn't happen one bit in 5 sessions. She stated that my ex would not change, which may or may not prove to be true in the end, but seemed even more reluctant to consider the possibility that he might change when she found out he was 1/2 Mexican. I do hope that is just my imagination. She did not meet the ex personally.

She also "sighed" at me for "not being very patient" in what was an austondingly difficult situation for me and my family that we were tearing our hair out over. I initially thought Grace was nice and even recommended her to my ex boyfriend who could use a therapist, but once I got a new attorney, I knew I could not use Ms. Nakamura anymore b/c I had foolishly signed away to authorize her to share personal info with him that was none of the old attorney's darned business! Plus, my psychiatrist stated to me that Ms. Nakamura did not return her phone calls or make an effort to obtain information from her. This caused communication problems and frusturation between my psychiatrist and me.

Overall, not worth the time and effort to see this therapist; I am sticking with my own psychiatrist and a different attorney to make up the time needed for therapy to complete a minor misdemeanor sentence. I understand that I am not perfect and bear the responsibilities for my own actions which were very foolish, but charging $100/hr to tell someone who is profoundly depressed and frightened to just read more and get hobbies just doesn't cut it from my perspective working in health care. My advice, for what it's worth, is to take your money and time with someone who doesn't care who your attorney is or what race or gender your significant other is, but about how they can help YOU.
