Mary Jo Smiley CMTPT

Nationally Certified Myofascial Trigger Point Therapist

Professional Member of the National Association of Myofascial Trigger Point Therapists

My main training was at the Pittsburgh School of Pain Management, the only 650 hour program in the USA that teaches the entire Travell and Simons "Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction the Trigger Point Manual" medical text in a one year diploma program.   This training prepares the student well to sit for the national exam and to go out into the world to help others eliminate their trigger points and referred pain!

I was introduced to myofascial trigger point therapy because of my own long-term pain issues. Finally diagnosed with "Fibromyalgia" in the late 80s, I was told, yet again, that nothing could be done. OTC pain meds were not helpful, nor was PT or anything else I tried. Frequent migraines and headaches plaged my days, upper back and shoulder pain was usually there. I often wondered that if it felt this bad at 30, what was it going to be like at 50 or 60?

Thankfully myofascial trigger point therapy found ME!

Trigger point therapy is a non-invasive, drug free, safe, effective, hands-on treatment that addresses the CAUSE of the pain! It addresses the trigger point itself and releases it with gradual pressure that can be easily regulated to your tolerance. The muscle is stretched and moved through its range of motion with the goal being pain free movement with a full normal range of motion.

In addition, the cause of the trigger points is addressed. Sometimes they are due to a fall, accident or other injury. But very often a person uses repetitive movements in work or play, or there can be poor posture, poor ergonomics, excessive stress, nutritional concerns. The trigger points will keep coming back if the perpetuating factors are not addressed.

Almost all of my pain issues, migraines and headaches were due to trigger points that I had accumulated from being normal human being and a rough and tumble country "tomboy" with 3 brothers, a few good falls and sudden stops etc.

EVERYONE has trigger points, even children. Most have even found the knots and tender spots, many have even discovered that pressing on them causes pain in another place of the body. The lucky ones have figured out for themselves or found someone that knew that pressing on the right spot could even make the pain go away!

Please allow me the honor of helping you by treating those trigger points or/and helping you to learn self-treatment so that you can STAY pain free.

A Certified Trigger point therapist is one of the best (and should be first) therapies to try if you are hurting! Mary Jo is nationally certified and knows her stuff! The scary stories you might hear that trigger point therapy hurts a lot are usually because the therapist is not well skilled. Mary Jo will find those painful spots all right (that is what you go to her for) but she is very careful to keep it at the level of "hurts good". The treatment should be "pleasantly painful", it is like your body KNOWs that this it the right amount of pressure. She listens to you and reacts accordingly if you say it is too much.

Trigger point therapy is the very best treatment for most headaches and neck and shoulder pain. I work on computers all day and the headaches I used to get were very frequent. Now I seldom get any headaches. REALLY!  She also helped me with the "carpal tunnel" pain that my doc was totally unable to help me with. PT was also useless, I was looking at the possibility of surgery. My arms no longer ache, my hands don't "go to sleep" at night and they are no longer cold all the time. NO surgery, no drugs and I didn't have to quit my job!

I recommended her to everyone. There is no age limit (other than the stairs to her office) My 80 year old grandma loved her too! She was very gentle with her, but still gave grandma noticeably more motion in her neck and her injured arm! She is sure that she is standing taller and not so bent over after just a few treatments. Mary Jo gave her some stretches to do which are really helpful and easy for her to do.

Plan on going more than once if you have some issues, but you should see some results in the first session. You will know while you are on the table that THIS is going to help! None of that "well, give me 3 months of 3X a week and you will feel somewhat better".  If you have some real issues take advantage of a package deal she offers... you can even put the treatment on a credit card if you need to.

Oh I also recommend her if you happen to be in an auto accident, another friend was hurt and had some whiplash after being rear ended. She contacted my friends doctor (who initially said no to massage), got the script billed the insurance and my friend has no neck pain or headaches anymore. She had gone to PT for 6 weeks and still had the headache she had constantly since right after the impact...

Oh, did I say that Mary Jo is AWESOME!!!
